Conceptualizing Local Wisdom Elements in The Development of Art Materials in Early Childhood Education: A Case Study
Abstract
This study explored and analyzed the integration of local wisdom into early childhood art materials in Lombok and Java Island schools. The research used a qualitative case study design. The data collection used were participatory observation, documentation, and semi-structured interviews with six teachers and two school leaders. In addition, in analyzing the data, the research used a thematic analysis proposed by Creswell using ATLAS.ti as an analytical tool to narrate, code, interpret, validate, and present the data. Triangulation, expert validation, and peer review were used to determine data credibility. The findings indicated that the three main categories, such as fine art, dance, and music, were incorporated local wisdom enhanced children's learning experiences and contributed to cultural preservation. Art materials rooted in local cultural values play a vital role in fostering cultural identity and creativity among children. Therefore, these results highlight the need for inclusive curricula representing cultural diversity, specifically in the teachers’ lesson plans, which could offer valuable insights for policymakers and educators. This study provides a foundation for further research on effectively integrating local wisdom, such as music, art, and traditional dance, specifically where the institution is rooted.
