PENGARUH JEDA-ISTIRAHAT TERHADAP PERFORMANSI PADA PEKERJAAN PENGOLAHAN KATA (WORD PROCESSING) MENGGUNAKAN KOMPUTER
Abstract
Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of an additional break on workers' performance on word processing task using computers. Performance is calculated on the basis of many words per minute typed correctly. The study involved 10 subjects assigned to retype scientific articles using MS Office Word 2003 with Windows XP Professional operating system. Schedules tested were: 5–60,5 minutes break after 60 minutes of work; 15–120, which is 15 minutes break after 120 minutes of work, and 0–240, which is working continuously for 4 hours (240 minutes) without a break . The actual length of work time undertaken by the subjects was 4 hours (240 minutes). The results showed that there is significant difference in performance on all three schedules tested. Schedule 5–60 gives the smallest decline among the two other schedules. Performance difference between 50–60 schedule and other schedules is significant, while the performance diference between 15–120 and 0–240 schedules is not significant. From the results of this study, workers on the processing of words with a computer were suggested to take more frequent breaks outside a structured break predetermined by company/ organization. In this case, the break does not mean not doing any works, but left the activity at the computer to perform other works.
Keywords: performance, word processing, break.
