Subtitling Strategies from Indonesian into English In My Existence’s Animation YouTube
Abstract
This research analyzes the subtitling strategies used in translating the Indonesian animated YouTube video "Aku Lebih Nyaman Begini Eps 15” into English. Using Gottlieb (1992) framework, the study identifies ten subtitling strategies and examines how each is applied in the translated subtitles. The findings show that transfer, paraphrase, and condensation are the most frequently used strategies due to the video’s simple conversational style and its frequent use of slang and informal expressions. Less common strategies, such as deletion, expansion, imitation, decimation, resignation, and transcription, appear only when needed, particularly in cases involving cultural references, untranslatable particles, or timing constraints. Overall, the research highlights how subtitling requires balancing clarity, accuracy, and efficiency to produce readable and natural English subtitles while maintaining the meaning and tone of the original Indonesian dialogue.
