THE PROCESS OF EDUCATION DEPICTED IN ANNIE DILLARD'S PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK: A DEWEYAN EXPERIENTIAL AND CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF NATURE-BASED LEARNING
Abstract
Abstract. This study investigates the process of education presented in Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974), a landmark work of American creative nonfiction in which sustained encounters with the natural world become occasions for profound intellectual and ethical transformation. Departing from the widely observed gap between idealized, experience-centered educational theory and the instrumentalist, outcome-driven reality of contemporary schooling, this research examines how Dillard's narrative constructs a coherent alternative model of learning rooted in sensory engagement, metaphorical meaning-construction, and critical reflection through paradox. Employing a critical qualitative research design in critical analysis, and guided by John Dewey's experiential education framework, the study subjects selected passages to systematic textual analysis and thematic coding. Findings reveal that the educational process in the text unfolds across three sequential stages corresponding to the principles of interaction and continuity, while the ideological analysis uncovers the text's sustained critique of anthropocentrism and educational instrumentalism. The study concludes that Pilgrim at Tinker Creek functions as both a literary enactment and a philosophical argument for a humanistic, ecologically grounded pedagogy that positions attentiveness, moral humility, and contemplative depth as indispensable conditions of authentic human learning.
